We all know about the benefits our body receives when we add turmeric to our diet. Often seen as a weight loss activator, blood purifier and immunity booster, turmeric has a special place in the ancient medicine system and is revered by Indians mostly. Turmeric has a special mention everytime one talks about Ayurveda and Ayurvedic medicines.
Not a single Indian dish is complete without a pinch of turmeric!
Such is our trust on turmeric that we use it in each and every aspect of our life, be it having it with warm water or using it as a face pack or even anointing our body with turmeric paste to keep off infections.

But do you know consuming excess turmeric poses a health risk? In this article we will discuss about the various health risks posed by over consumption of turmeric:
Yes, it can be. Just like every other spice and herb, turmeric should be consumed in a limited quantity. Or in other words, turmeric is useful for the body only when the body is provided with a specific quantity of it.
The use of turmeric in foods is also quite minimal; basically less than a spoon of turmeric powder is used in Indian food.
As per several health reports, ideally a person can consume around 500 milligrams of turmeric a day; while it can go up to 1-3 grams, but an amount higher than this can pose risk.
The amount of turmeric a person can consume also depends on the existing health condition of an individual.
When you consume more turmeric, certain health issues start showing up.
The degree of the complications depends on the quantity of turmeric one has eaten. The mild symptoms of over consumption of turmeric are upset stomach, diarrhea, acid reflux, dizziness and headache.
Having a large amount of turmeric over a longer period of time can increase the risk of kidney stone formation as it increases the levels of urinary oxalate.
However there is no serious side effect of turmeric when it is applied to the skin. It usually leaves a yellowish hue on the skin after its application which is why very less amount of turmeric is used in face packs. Turmeric is usually safe on the skin.
People who have gallbladder issues, bleeding disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disorder are advised to consume turmeric as little as possible.
People with diabetes should also have turmeric with caution as the curcumin in the turmeric is known to reduce the blood sugar level drastically.
Those with iron deficiency should avoid consuming turmeric as it reduces the absorption of iron by almost 20%.
It is believed that the curcumin element present in turmeric can suppress the growth of fat tissues.
Several research studies have been done on the effect of turmeric in reducing weight and body mass index. Curcumin can suppress 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzyme which activates cortisol, higher levels of which in adipocytes (fat cells which store energy) induces obesity, as per a study.
It also controls sugar levels and prevents insulin resistance as a result of which fat is not retained in the body.
Apart from weight management, turmeric helps in improving the overall health of the body, relieves gas, removes worms from the body, helps in digestion and is also known to work for relieving the pain in arthritis patients.
