PORVORIM: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has suggested investigating the increase in the number of patients with kidney dialysis as the House discussed the ICU for dialysis unit at South Goa District Hospital.
“Research needs to be carried out to find out as to why there are so many cases of dialysis, particularly in Canacona. The Neurology Department can take the initiative with the IIT and WHO, and whatever precautions that can be taken be conveyed to the people. We can accordingly advise the people to take precautions so that the cases can be reduced in Goa,” he said.
Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas had earlier tabled a calling attention motion which stated, “Fear and anxiety in the minds of the people of South Goa due to unavailability of ICU in the dialysis unit at the South Goa District Hospital, hence there is hardship faced by people to take critical patients to GMC. The steps Government intends to take in the matter."
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, in his written reply, stated that the dialysis unit in SGDH is a 12-bedded unit and so far 9931 dialyses have been performed and there has been only one patient in January 2021 who collapsed and needed medical attention which was immediately given in Casualty by the physicians.
“Subsequently, there were only 10 referrals of patients who were having severe hypertension. No patients needed ICU care. There is a doctor posted at the dialysis unit to monitor the patient. In case of medical emergency SGDH casualty has round the clock physicians. One ICU at SGDH is a fully 9-bedded equipped unit. Proposal for additional staffing to run the unit has been proposed. For the new hospital 426 posts were proposed out of which 89 posts created and 337 post are pending for creation. There is proposal for starting a cathlab and a neurology and Medical College in SGDH,” his reply read.
During the discussion, Rane agreed with Viegas’ demand for a full fledged ICU in SGDH claiming that alike COVID-19 pandemic when the temporary arrangement was made, the government will follow the same model. The government has also mooted the idea to convert the Old Hospicio into a Nursing and Rehab centre.
