IPSWICH – Interim Town Manager Mary Gallivan and Public Health Director Colleen Fermon announce that the Public Health Department will hold a sharps collection event next week, in partnership with One Stop Harm Reduction Center and the Department of Public Works.

The sharps collection event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Ipswich Middle High School, 130-134 High St. The event will be held in conjunction with the Department of Public Works electronics collection event.

All traffic for the event should enter School Street via Linebrook Road.

Used needles and syringes, if not disposed of properly, can cause injury and spread infections like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. The needle and syringe collection event is designed to encourage Ipswich residents to protect fellow community members by safely disposing of sharps.

The event is a benefit of the town’s syringe services program that began in August. The program is provided by One Stop to help keep town residents safe by offering free harm reduction services to participants, such as access to sterile needles and syringes, disposal of used sharps, access to testing for hepatitis C, HIV, and other sexually transmitted diseases, and overdose prevention education.
